My date’s chicken was hot, and there was lots of it, so at least one of the meals was right. I had to send it back, pointing out that it was not only cold, but a very miserly portion. I ended up with three tired pieces of brisket, about the size of a medium piece of biltong, and they were stone cold. A single meat dish is around £10, or you can double up and get two meats for £14, as I had done. The waitress was friendly and polite, and food came relatively quickly, as you’d expect when you’re eating food that is, er, already cooked! I had the brisket and pulled pork combo while my date had the half chicken. Unfortunately this was probably the best part of the meal. We were given a complimentary mug of popcorn, which I liked, and it had a bit of the meat seasoning rub on it. The tables inside are built for big groups (and big people – my table was quite high and I’m 6” tall) and as such you’ll probably be paired up with other people during your meal – I much prefer having the option of sitting with my date at a smaller table, but that’s a personal preference. He justified his request by saying he wanted to be ‘organised’. The manager was trying to take people’s names, even those people that had not booked, but the diners seemed to react to this by just ignoring him and refused to give him their names. Bear in mind the restaurant appeared to be pretty empty. I headed along on a weeknight and there was a queue out of the door which seemed to be caused by the fact that only the manager was seating people – two or three staff stood at the bar not doing much while the queue of 4 groups was actually propping the front door open. I work less than 5 minutes away, and myself and all of my carnivore friends had been dribbling relentlessly for months as we watched the restaurant literally take shape. I really wanted Blues to be special, I really did.
